As we all probably know by now, snoring can be much more of a problem than you would expect from just a loud sound. It affects everyone in the vicinity and most probably the snorer the most. In fact, many cases of snoring are in fact signs of sleep apnea, a condition where the air passage gets blocked and the person has a reduced intake of oxygen as a result of it. Of course, this is a bigger problem than just snoring and in cases of sleep apnea it is almost recommendable to get surgery.
If you are just snoring heavily, you might first try other devices that are meant to deal with snoring. If nothing else works, it might be time for surgery.
The first and the most important thing that you need to do is have your physician check your airways. It might also be a good idea to check it with another doctor, an otolaryngologist to maxillofacial surgeon. Only after they have given their approval of the procedure can you proceed.
There are several procedures to choose from and it is fair of us to inform you that there aren’t many scientific studies done on the effects that they have.
These procedures are all very new and they are still something of a novelty in the world of surgery. There is one that has proven to be efficient and it was approved by the FDA and it is called laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty or LAUP for short. It involves the removal or the shaving off of the uvula.
There are a number of other procedures, but you should first inquire about all of them before committing to one without knowing what it is all about.
